Hows this for total devotion to luthiery. From an Australian woodworking forum:

"On my way home tonight,a rubbish skip truck in front of me lost a piece of 100mm steel pipe about a metre long!

As I swerved to avoid it going through my windscreen,I had this thought about making a bending iron out of it,(it was like a flash,scary hey!) so I decided to go back and get it,half expecting it to be sitting in somebody's face!!!!.

My question: Is this too round/big to use for a bending iron?? "

Dont you love it...the guy nearly gets killed by a hunk of pipe falling off the back of a truck and all he can think of is how to make a side bender out of the offending item! kiwigeo38959.354525463

100mm should be a bit big for tight cutaways, nonetheless, it should be good for upper and lower bouts on Dreads, what is 100mm in inches again? I'd keep it anyways

100mm is about 4" (25.4mm per inch)

My bending iron is a piece of 100 mm, thick walled steel pipe. I had a machine shop put it in their hydraulic press and squeeze it into an oval shape, and weld a flage to it. Works great for most bends, I just need another pipe for the tight bends on mandolin ribs and such.Arnt38959.3934143518

Yup, I can relate to this!!!


I nearly fell off my bike on the way to work two days ago after gazing lustily at a metre long 1.5 ft cherry tree trunk lying by the side of the road as I was passing it, I was imagining it quatersawn/flatsawn, where I would dry it, and who would cut it for me when a loud beep in front of me reminded me to focus on my cycling..

I know the tree had been sawn down a week ago, we had a really bad storm and the cherry tree hit the dust...Sam Price38959.5810185185

Mind you, what is a MEASLY LOG   compared to this;

I work in an art college where the owner/pricipal is a Lady (MBE...watch out for her in the Honors list, I ain't giving out her name in public, as I don't want any cyber stalkers turning up at work... )

..she owns an ENTIRE estate (or the entire village) with a working sawmill...there's a lotta sitka spruce and other wonderful woods growing on her 1000 acre land..there may be some wood already being seasoned, as I know that it's used on the estate...

WOW, I need to tap into this, I did not realise all this until JUST NOW!!!!!!!

I'm gonna start being nice to her...it's a long shot, but you never know.
